This is for old radios with metal can electrolytics. You can actually hollow out the old capacitor (removing the guts) then put in the old metal can a new more modern electrolytic. This is for cosmetic purposes. I think some heat may be used to loosen what looked like a tarry substance on the insides of the capacitor. I imagine a paint stripper gun would work. I would avoid breathing in the fumes! If the capacitor has something like (no flammol or asbestol or some sort of label) BEWARE of PCBS!! I know you can "condition" electrolytics. If they are dried out you can apply a small voltage and bring them up to full voltage ratings with time to allow the capacitor to renew itself. I know there was an article in QST..sometime around 2001 or so on ESR and how to measure leaks in capacitors. ESR stands for some sort of unwanted resistance in series with the capacitor (series resistance). Never heard of actually repairing an electrolytic myself. I might mention...Im doing some serious antenna work this fall and have ordered a new automatic antenna tuner. It is an LDG AT100 PRO. It has 2 antenna positions. One for my little mini beam (TGM) and I have ordered the external balun to permit an INVERTED L to be tuned for the bands 30 meters and lower. I even hope to get on 160 this winter. I have acquired an old FT301D and am currently fixing a low power output problem with it. It wont put out anything more than QRP (5 watts) currently! I have also ordered a 144/440 mhz cushcraft beam. It operates two bands from one feedline. Im going to figure out the feedline scheme and I will make up a homebrew dual band beam using all the vhf/uhf yagi pieces I have in my collection. I bought an FT221 2 meter multimode for the grand sum of $100 at the Ottawa flea market. It works real well. -- Hope to be very active this winter on qrp, a bit of qro and vhf/uhf. 73 Earl VE3AB (ps my web site is earlandrews dot com) I have sold a few bits and pieces to other qrpers lately.
